Some Santa Clarita Valley mothers received an unexpected Mother’s Day gift from the folks at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary Sunday as part of the park’s annual Mother’s Day raffle.

For anyone predeceased by her mother who visited the park on Sierra Highway Sunday, Eternal Valley staff prepared an extra warm welcome, putting out a food spread of snacks and inviting participation in a raffle.

“Families come up here (Mortuary office) and sign up for a raffle,” said Denise Tunson, one of the park’s managers.

Raffled off were gift baskets containing “mom items” such as lotions, potted plants and gift cards for manicures and pedicures, she said.

“It’s unfortunate that they have to come here for their mom,” Tunson said. “So, if there’s anything we can do to make them feel better since their moms are here, we do it.”

One such mom was Latasha Wilson, who arrived at the park Sunday with her toddler son, Eli, to visit her grandmother who died last year, she said.

“It’s hard,” she said, reflecting on her grandmother’s passing. “This is the first time we’ve been here.”

Raffles were held every hour on the hour with the big prize — tickets for a Los Angeles Dodgers game — presented at 2 p.m.

Eternal Valley officials decided to hold the raffle again this year after last year’s inaugural kickoff proved so successful, Tunson Said.

“It gets busier every year,” she said, reflecting on the number of people who visit the grave sites of their mothers.

“They bring their picnic baskets and spend time here,” she said.
