Mideast policy

With the sixth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq just passed, please remind your readers that the debate about the U.S.-Iraq policy should not just be whether U.S. troops should stay or leave.

President Obama has been arguing for a new, comprehensive approach to the region, a policy that acknowledges the United States can’t solve one conflict without dealing with all the different regional interests.

I’ve read recently that former national security advisers Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft addressed Congress and called for sustained U.S. diplomatic engagement with Iran.

They argued that this approach will be essential to ending the conflict in Iraq, preventing a war with Iran, beginning to transform the U.S. relationship with the greater Middle East, and preventing a quagmire in Afganistan.

I hope that our senators will speak out in public in favor of such a policy.
