Decked in pink hard hats and purple shirts, approximately 300 people turned out Saturday to help build homes for veterans and their families in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The crowd of mostly women volunteered to participate in the Women Empowerment Build, or “WE Build,” for Habitat for Humanity of the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, with the goal of helping complete portions of work for the “Habitat for Heroes” project — which includes 87 residential units that will be constructed in the area of the intersection of Centre Pointe Parkway and Golden Triangle Road near Bowman High School.

“It’s real work, and it’s hard work,” said Donna Deutchman, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. “But it has real impact.”

Participants were set to work on an assortment of tasks and projects, including building fencing, putting up walls and painting.

“We want women to feel empowered by their ability to join together with other women to address community problems or issues,” Deutchman said.

The Women Empowerment Build encourages those who volunteer to make a difference in their community and provides women with the opportunity to learn some construction techniques in a supportive environment, according to organizers.

“If you think about what you’re doing, you’re changing the lives of American veterans,” Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste told attendees Saturday.

Participants got quite a bit out of Saturday’s event, as well.

“Two of the things I’m going to be most proud of in my life are this shirt and this pink hard hat,” Weste said.
