Taste of the Town returns to Valencia

An estimated 2,000 people sample food and drink at 26th annual event

Santa Clarita is ‘sweet’ according to thousands who attended the 26th annual Taste of the Town event in Valencia Sunday.

For more than a quarter century, local wine makers, beer makers, restaurateurs and others have raised money for the Child and Family Center.

On Sunday, an estimated 2,000 people showed up at Mann Biomedical Park, grabbed their souvenir wine glasses and set out to sample the wares of more than 40 participants.

“This is way too much food, and way too much drink,” said a contentedMary Dutra, of Fresno, who attended the event while visiting family in Santa Clarita.

“There is no way you can get through this all,” she said.

More than 40 restaurants donate their time, their food and their expertise. Local businesses and community-minded leaders provide sponsorship dollars and in-kind services that helps raise much-needed money for the center.

Co-chaired by local educators Joyce Carson and Sandra Smith, Taste of the Town’s sponsors include: Bank of Santa Clarita, Whitening Lighting, The Magazine of Santa Clarita/Elite Magazine, Classic Designs Jewelry, Mann Biomedical Park, The Signal Newspaper, KHTS AM-1220, Habitat for Humanity, Shepard Insurance Company, Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing Co., Santa Clarita Studios, Salon 7, CBRE Richard Ellis and the city of Santa Clarita. 

Event patrons strolled through the sunny park, wine glasses in hand, to the sound of a live band. Some participated in live and silent auctions.

Lines formed in front of white tent kiosks offering a wide sampling of food and drink.

Under The Signal canopy, wine entrepreneur Robert Wagner, of Magnavino Cellars, poured his award-winning petite sirah for interested wine tasters.

“The turnout has been steady,” he said. “And a lot of people had said this is excellent wine.”

Frank Kelly, of the Valencia Pipe Company, asked to try some of Wagner’s zinfandel.

“This has got both fruit and pepper,” he said describing a mouthful of “zin.”

Assemblyman Scott Wilk was there with his wife Vanessa. Recently-elected Santa Clarita City Councilman Dante Acosta was there as well.

Over at the tent manned by the Castaic Lake Water Agency, free bottles of water were being scooped out of an ice-filled barrel and handed out to anyone who wanted one.

“We’re trying to keep people hydrated,” said agency representative Karen Denkinger. “It’s been very busy. People get excited when they see the water.”
