The College of the Canyons softball team dropped its first game against host College of the Desert 6-1 on Saturday.

This is the third consecutive year the Cougars have won the Western State Conference, Blue Division title and is the fifth overall playoff berth for seventh-year head coach John Wissmath.

Much like last year when the Cougars lost its first game of the California Community College Athletic Association Regional first round 14-5 to Saddleback, COC will have to dig itself out of another hole.

“I told the girls that we’ve done it before,” said Wissmath. “We lost the first game then came back and won two in a row. We can do this. We still have a good opportunity.”

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third but Desert immediately took the lead back, scoring two in the bottom of the inning.

The Roadrunners then padded their lead in the fifth with four more runs. Desert was led offensively by Rylee Perez who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a triple and Alyssa Fuimaono who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.

Fuimaono also pitched all seven innings, holding the Cougars to one run on nine hits while striking out six.

Morgan Simmons took the loss for COC, pitching five innings and allowing six runs on nine hits.

COC needs a win today at noon if it wants to advance to the CCCAA Super Regional. If the Cougars win the first game, a second will be played to determine who advances.

“We hit the ball but they were untimely hits,” said Wissmath, “We had the bases loaded on three different occasions but we couldn’t come through.”
