The Board of Equalization opened its new office in April at 25360 Magic Mountain Parkway, at the intersection of Tourney Road right off the I-5 freeway.

The Board of Equalization opened its newest office in Santa Clarita on Magic Mountain Parkway and Tourney Road in April.

Serving businesses, the new location helps meet the needs of business taxpayers in the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas.

Officials said the taxpayer center is expected to serve some 41,000 accounts of business owners operating retail businesses in the region.

In 2012, the BOE reports that the city of Santa Clarita had more than $2.7 billion in taxable sales, an increase of 6.3 percent from the previous year.

The 22,005-square-foot office features self-service computer kiosks that enable customers to register for a permit or license, file a return and make a payment.

Due to redistricting, the Van Nuys office was identified for closure last year.

Some of the accounts handled out of that office were moved to a BOE office in Glendale. The others are now handled out of the new Santa Clarita office.

Last year, George Runner, member of the State Board of Equalization, told The Signal that the Van Nuys location office was very old. The office space was inefficient, and people had to pay to park – making it inconvenient for taxpayers and employees, he said.

Runner projected that the Santa Clarita office would have up to 100 employees.

The state board collects state sales and use taxes, among other things like issuing seller’s permits, which help fund state and local governments.

It also serves as an appellate court for franchise and income tax appeals, and it offers them an advocate with elected board members like Runner – giving people a contact to meet with and discuss any compliance or audit issues.

“We can reach out to taxpayers and help them deal with their challenges or with the confusing tax situations we have here in California,” Runner said.

The Board of Equalization is located at 25360 Magic Mountain Parkway, Suite 330 and can be reached by phone at 661-222-6000.
