The discovery of a body inside a burning Newhall apartment is under investigation by homicide detectives and arson investigators, county fire and coroner officials said Tuesday.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday, firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the 26700 block of North Oak Crossing Road in Newhall for reports of an apartment fire, they said.

“There was a structure fire and a body found inside that structure,” Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said Tuesday, adding the matter is now being investigated by Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives.

The identity, age and gender of the victim has yet to be determined, said Kelly Yagerlener, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on the body, Yagerlener said.

Firefighters arriving at the single-story apartment complex found smoke and fire showing from the dwelling, said Fire Department Inspector Melanie Flores.

Flores said the apartment was in “extreme pack rat conditions.”

After knocking down the fire, firefighters notified arson investigators with the Sheriff’s Department, as well as the coroner.

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday.
