In the most critical match of the day in terms of the Foothill League standings, the Hart High Indians clinched a spot in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Hart defeated Golden Valley 13-5 at Golden Valley High on Thursday and is now in sole possession of third place in the Foothill League with two matches to play.

The Indians hold a two-match lead over the Grizzlies and own the third-place tiebreaker thanks to a second 13-5 win this season.

Hart (10-8 overall) won eight of nine sets on the doubles side with the No. 1 team of Luke Distad and Michael Lange taking their sets 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1 and the No. 2 team of Sam Delgado and Zach Killian winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4.

“They knew,” said Hart head coach Chris Mansfield on if his players understood what was at stake in the match. “I kind of mentioned it, but didn’t make a big deal about it. They knew.”

Elliot Miller won two sets in singles (6-2, 6-1), as did usual doubles player Bruce Shephard (6-2, 6-2).

Golden Valley’s Brandon Yu continued his run at a Player of the Year prize with a 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 afternoon. Miller was the only one to win some games off him.

The match started with Hart trailing early in the first round before the doubles teams led a turnaround.
