Hundreds of job-searchers attended Wednesday’s Job & Career Fair at College of the Canyons, where more than 60 firms and agencies provided information about careers and accepted resumes.

The event, offered in partnership with The Signal and KHTS AM 1220, also provided workshops on interviewing tips, Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and LinkedIn as a job-hunting tool.

“We had everything from students to people entering the work force after being let go or after a divorce or after completing child rearing,” one business representative who participated in the event said of the job-searchers.

Employers scheduled to have booths at the event ranged from government agencies like the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Forest Service and the Marine Corps, to businesses such as Office Max/Office Depot, the Behavioral Learning Center and Maria’s Italian Kitchen.

“I’m looking for any kind of job at this point,” said job hunter Kendall Williams, a 19-year-old College of the Canyons student and biology major.

She wants to be a doctor when she completes her education, but right now, Williams said, “I would take any kind of job I could get.”

Another job-searcher was disappointed that more opportunitiesfor immediate interviews weren’t available.

“I was trying to see if I could find a job,” said Juanita Cruz, who is facing a layoff in 90 days. Wednesday’s was the first job fair she had attended.

“They would say, ‘You’re welcome to go online and apply (for a position),’” she said of recruiters at the fair. “They didn’t take the time to get to know us or take our resumes.”

A booth worker said she had collected 60 resumes, although the company had no immediate openings. She estimated some 250 people attended the event.

The job fair ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gymnasium on COC’s main campus in Valencia. A second job fair is scheduled 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 at the COC Canyon Country campus.
