Nissan of Valencia gave away more than $21,800 in gifts — ranging from scholarships to a 2014 Nissan Versa sedan — during its annual Nissan Car Giveaway this week for local Hart district 11th- and 12th-graders.

Other local businesses kicked in another $5,000 in prizes for the event, which featured a drum line competition and other entertainment during the two-hour Car Giveaway at College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium.

Valencia High School junior Taylor Morrison won the grand prize — the Nissan Versa — at the culmination of the event created by Nissan of Valencia in partnership with the William S. Hart Union High School District to encourage kids to stay in school.

“I’m like gosh, what a car,” Morrison said right after she was announced the winner. “I had a good feeling, but it’s like there’s too many kids, like there’s no way I’m going to win,” she said.

A total of 6,075 students qualified for the drawings. They were required to have a 97 percent or higher attendance record during the second and third quarters of the school year, Oct. 21-March 21, to have a 2.0 grade point average or higher with no disciplinary action against them, such as out-of-school suspensions or expulsions, for the school year.

“The whole goal is to get kids to show up in school,” said Daniel Sterkel, executive manager of Nissan of Valencia. “If your kid can show up 97 percent of the time, then it’s on the principals, and it’s on the teachers, to do their jobs,” he said.

Among the awards were $500 each for Canyon, Golden Valley, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch high schools’ drum lines, along with $1,000 for Hart High School’s drum line, which won the drum line competition.

Schools whose students were eligible for the contest were Bowman, Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch high schools, Academy of the Canyons and Sequoia Charter School.

All the students who won will be at Nissan of Valencia at 10 a.m. Saturday to pick up their prizes.

Local businesses that contributed to the event include Valencia Body Shop, Mike Bjorkman of Home Smart Real Estate, Southwest Dealer Services, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Reach Local, Black Diamond Tinting, The Signal, the Daily News, KHTS, Magazine of Santa Clarita, Salt Creek, RJ Auto Detail and Corporate Benefit Marketing/John O’Connell Santa Clarita Free Classifieds Time Warner Guest Concepts.

A total of $26,800 awards were presented to students during the Monday evening event.
