Locals start at Mt. SAC

A handful of athletes with Santa Clarita Valley ties got things started at the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Friday in Walnut.

Select events were held on Friday for the massive event that includes high school, college and professional level competition.

In the high school category, Canyon’s Steven Childs won the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 8 inches while also notching a sixth-place mark of 40-9 in the triple jump.

Saugus’ Katie O’Brien was second in the girls shot put open event with a toss of 36-7 1/4.

In that same event for boys, West Ranch’s Mason Falahat was also second place with his 49-4 1/2 mark, which was an inch and a half short of the winning distance.

Falahat was also ninth in the discus toss in 138-9 1/2.

On the track, Hart’s Bailey James beat out two fellow Foothill League runners in the one-mile race with a sixth-place time of 4 minutes, 18.21 seconds.

Saugus’ Brian Zabilski followed in ninth (4:22.92) and fellow Saugus runner Alex Pearson took 15th (4:27.99).

As for local alumni, Saugus graduate Shannon Murakami took third in the 5,000-meter Olympic Development race that includes college and professional runners.

Murakami clocked a 16:05.36 while running unattached.

In the men’s 5K Olympic Development race, The Master’s College graduate John Gilbertson finished 21st in 14:12.74. He was running for Mammoth Track Club.

The Mt. SAC Relays continue today as a slew of local athletes will take part.
