Pay inequality is not a myth of the liberal left

Leveling the playing field has been a struggle our country has mightily faced throughout history, but denying the existence of inequality creates an even larger hurdle.

In Steve Lunetta’s column April 14 column in The Signal (“Women get ripped off!”), which claims there is no gender pay gap, selective snippets of the truth are used to distort the actual truth.

Although pay gaps sometimes do reflect men’s and women’s choices, researchers who have taken into account all contributing factors still find that men are paid more than women.

An even greater difference in earnings exists among full-time workers 10 years after college graduation.

Gender pay discrimination isn’t a myth or a “cynical” construct of the liberal left. It is the simple truth that women face a pay gap in nearly every occupation.

These facts are substantiated by a recent study by the American Association of University Women in which “apples are compared to apples.”

Equal work deserves equal pay, and injustice is an issue that should matter to all Americans.

As Kurt Vonnegut said: “The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal.”
