Canyon boys volleyball is starting to back up the idea that it is a vastly improved team this season.

The Canyon Cowboys edged the Hart Indians 3-2 by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 23-25, 25-16, 18-16 on Thursday at Hart High School.

That puts Canyon at 11-6 overall and 2-3 in Foothill play and in fourth place at the midway point of league competition.

“It’s really important for us because if we can beat Hart and Golden Valley on the second go-around of league and maybe get another win and get fourth place, we could get an at-large bid in the playoffs,” said Canyon head coach Jeff Cody.

The Cowboys were led by Jacob DeYoung’s 27 kills, Noah Ozuna’s 17 digs and Jacob Frederick’s 37 assists.

Jared Hathaway also added four aces for Canyon.

Hart (2-7 overall, 1-4 Foothill League) was paced by Sonny Mueller’s 14 kills and 14 digs while Justin Fortner and D.B. Gibbs each added 11 kills. Griffin Rost had 53 assists and Tad Hawthorne had eight kills and 14 digs in his first match of the season after returning from injury.

Saugus 3, Golden Valley 0

The Saugus Centurions spread out their scoring in a sweep of the Golden Valley Grizzlies by scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-11 on Thursday at Saugus High.

The win keeps Saugus (10-2, 4-1) in second place in league behind Valencia.

Max Nua led Saugus with 13 kills and added eight digs while teammate Zech Lee had 11 kills and five digs. Saugus’ Grant Spooner tacked on six kills of his own and Justin Coleman dished out 32 assists.

Bradley Surette led Golden Valley with six blocks and six kills and his teammate Dominic Scaglione had 10 digs.

Golden Valley (7-6, 0-5) remains winless in Foothill play.
