Pitching has never been the issue for the Saugus Centurions.

Scoring runs has been the problem.

But against the Golden Valley Grizzlies, Saugus finally found some run production.

Behind clutch two-out hitting, the Centurions manufactured runs and defeated Golden Valley 8-1 Wednesday at Saugus High School.

Of its eight runs, five came with two outs, including a two-run single by Brendan Griffith in the bottom of the first and a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double by Adam Sinatra in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0.

“We did a lot of situational hitting (Tuesday in practice), and our goal was to take it into games,” said Saugus head coach John Maggiora. “For the most part we did.”

The runs proved to be plenty for Saugus starting pitcher Anthony Donatella, who allowed six hits and one run over six innings, with five strikeouts.

Of the 18 outs that Donatella recorded, 11 came by way of the ground ball.

“He fell behind in the count to a lot of hitters, but he worked through it,” Maggiora said. “It was a gutty performance.”

As a whole, the Saugus staff has been solid through six league games.

It’s held oppositions to two runs or less four times, including two shutouts.

Jaiden France pitched for Golden Valley, but was less effective than he was in the Foothill League opener against the Centurions.

France struck out five and allowed one earned run over his complete-game effort against Saugus on March 19, but in the rematch he was tagged for seven earned runs in four-plus innings of work.

The Grizzlies (4-14 overall, 0-6 Foothill) got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Lukas Granado.

With the win, Saugus (10-5, 4-2) remains tied with West Ranch and Valencia for second place in the Foothill League.

The final game of the series between the Centurions and Grizzlies will be played Friday at Golden Valley.
