Tossed paper story lopsided

Regarding the “Tossed paper causes incident at Canyon” story in The Signal April 1: This is just one more example of the parenting-induced and encouraged hypersensitivity to even the least of the “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.”

Mike Motherspaw is an exceptionally dedicated and passionate teacher. This merely playful act derived from the respect and understanding Mike has earned with his students over the years, which permitted him to toss something as innocent as a crumpled piece of paper at a student and not expect such an unreasoned outcry.

The visibly lopsided reporting — fully entertaining the possibility that Mike is a problem, rather than balancing that with any commentary about his exemplary record of accomplishment with his students, is shameful.

I respectfully request The Signal to either apologize, or come equally to the defense of Motherspaw as a valued member of this community whose reputation should not be compromised by the implication that this was tantamount to assault.

As a father of one beautiful daughter myself, I would have asked for a private meeting with the teacher rather than trying the teacher in the court of misinformed, or incompletely informed, public opinion.

By not doing so, the parents have done far more damage to their daughter’s ability to deal with life than anything that occurred in that classroom.
