Lewis Stallworth was an unlikeable player in 2012-13.

The sort of player you root against.

A volume scorer, but a chucker.

A look-at-me player.

A good player who should be great.

The light turned on prior to the 2013-14 season.

Stallworth quickly became the sort of player you cheer for.

Like never before in his three-year varsity career had he tried so hard to get others involved.

A volume scorer with a much better shooting percentage.

A great player who found out what it took to be great.

Where as last year, and this is a true story, Stallworth asked about how many points he scored, this season he asked how many assists he had and what was his shooting percentage.

Hart’s stats have to be inaccurate, because the four assists per game that Stallworth is said to have averaged this season just feels off.

Stallworth’s court vision was incomparable this season — up there with some of the great point guards in Santa Clarita Valley history.

His ability to anticipate a teammate’s next step, his ability to squeeze a pass between the tiniest of spaces and his recognition of when to pass were things of beauty.

And we haven’t even gotten to his ability to score yet.

Stallworth is 6 feet tall, but seemingly jumps that high.

He played above the rim, from long range and from inside the 3-point line utilizing his jumping/hanging ability like no other.

Stallworth averaged 20 points per game — and again, that seems low.

On Jan. 24 against Valencia, he had a near-masterpiece offensive performance.

At one point in the game he made 10 consecutive shots.

In the third quarter, he made all seven and scored 17 points.

He made 13-of-16 shots in the game and scored 31 points.

Stallworth was the undeniable motor for a Hart team that went a perfect 10-0 in Foothill League play and 26-3 overall.

Stallworth was an All-CIF Southern Section Division IIA selection, the Foothill League’s Player of the Year and now we honor him as the 2014 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
