Hart senior midfielder Sophie Cortes helped lead her team to the CIF-Southern Section Division II championship game.

The Hart girls soccer team was defined by talent all around.

But it was midfielder Sophie Cortes who best epitomized just who the Indians were.

She was tenacious, at times deceptive, skilled and always willing to get under her opponents’ skin with no apologies.

Almost always the smallest girl on the field — Cortes stands at just 5-feet tall — the senior played with the intensity of a girl twice her size.

That is, when she wasn’t using her small frame to her advantage.

That was the case when Cortes scored perhaps her biggest goal of the season — a header against Valencia late in a near must-win contest on Feb. 11.

With teammate Destinney Duron set to take a deep throw-in, Cortes snuck to the near side post unmarked, and easily received the toss and planted it in the back of the net.

In her senior season she remained the highlight of the Hart team for the second straight season, earning her second All CIF-Southern Section Division II honor in as many years.

She was named the Foothill League’s Player of the Year by league coaches this season, and was a first teamer in 2013.

Despite playing in the midfield, Cortes was adept at pushing up and putting herself in position to score — she was second on the team with 11 goals; She was also a facilitator, leading the team with 12 assists.

And she’ll continue to be a force on the soccer field next season, when she arrives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

For now, though, The Signal honors Cortes as the 2014 All-Santa Clarita Valley Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
