Motorcycles are unsafe; get them off the road

Every week, it seems, a motorcyclist has been gravely injured, with death galore in many of the accidents.

Now is the time to make motorcycles illegal upon our city streets; motorcycles should only be allowed on dirt paths, out somewhere in the quiet countryside, but never upon our city streets.

Many people who ride motorcycles are their own worst enemies. That is to say, they take too many foolish chances on their motorcycles.

Just the other day I saw a motorcycle rider riding for about two miles on only his back wheel; the front wheel was high in the air. As I see it, that rider was just looking for an accident.

Motorcycles just are not meant for the open road because they have almost no protection.

In the state of Michigan, my old home state, one no longer legally has to wear a helmet while riding his or her motorcycle. Michigan voted to do away with mandatory helmets for motorcyclists.

The majority reasoned that the former helmet law invaded a rider’s freedom of expression since the only people injured in motorcycle accidents are the riders themselves.

But motorcycle riders cost our state of California many dollars in hospital bills each year — that is, for those who do not end up dead on arrival at a hospital.

I say get street motorcycles legally off the road. Now is the time.
