It was the night of April 6, 1970, when California Highway Patrol officers Roger Gore and Walt Frago got a call about two men brandishing a gun near Jay's Coffee Shop close to the intersection of The Old Road and Magic Mountain Parkway.

When Frago and Gore arrived on the scene, Bobby Augusta Davis and Jack Twinning shot at and killed the officers. When officers James Pence and George Alleyn responded moments later, they were also shot and killed.

The so-called Newhall Incident has since served as a training example for new officers going through the CHP's training academy, and was also the subject of John Anderson's book, "The Newhall Incident: America's Worst Uniformed Cop Massacre."

Friday's ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at the CHP's Newhall area station, located on The Old Road south of Highway 126. The freeway dedication will take place at the Caltrans North region 3 yard at 28820 The Old Road.

Among those attending the event will be Congressman Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita and County District Attorney Steve Cooley.
