Believing this year’s election to be a crucial one for the Santa Clarita City Council, The Signal conducted one-on-one interviews with all candidates who agreed and weighed the 13 choices carefully.

Based on our belief that the city faces a crisis of leadership, we recommend our readers vote for:

Gloria Mercado-Fortine: This William S. Hart Union High School District board member has a long record of service to this community, experience in handling budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars, and a tested and proven record of leadership characterized by grace and composure.

Duane Harte: This long-time resident also has a long history of service to the community, 42 years of experience as a business owner and a history of consensus-building that would be valuable on the council at this time.

Laurene Weste: This long-serving council member has an impressive portfolio of accomplishments for the city, including being part of the team that built city reserves despite the Great Recession; being the leader in the drive for open space preservation; and, more recently, launching a movement for community gardens throughout the valley.

Whatever your choices, we urge you to visit your polling place on Tuesday and make your voice heard in this critical City Council race.
