19th annual Kids’ Cooking Campaign teaches students to whip up healthy meals

Dozens of youngsters donned their chef hats Friday for an up-close look on how to prepare a healthy meal.

The event was held at the Santa Clarita Valley School Food Services Agency as part of the 19th annual Kids’ Cooking Campaign.

The goals of the campaign, according to the School Food Services Agency, are to teach children the skills necessary for simple food preparation so they can make meals for themselves or their families, and to help young children experience the positive social, nutritional and psychological values of eating together with friends and families, particularly in an age where traditional family meals are not as commonplace as they used to be.

Karen Lyznick brought her students from Canyon Springs Community School to participate in the event Friday.

“It’s nice that they can come here and see how the healthy food is prepared for them,” she said of her students.
