Saugus High School Principal Bill Bolde said he’s never before gone through such an in-depth hiring process for a coach.

After a monthlong search, he and a committee of school officials and consultants arrived at their decision for the school’s new varsity boys basketball head coach.

On Friday, Saugus announced the hiring of Bill Bedgood to take over the program and replace recently dismissed former head coach Derek Ballard.

Bedgood, 39, is a 1992 Hart High graduate, former College of the Canyons and California Lutheran basketball player and an experienced high school coach.

Most recently, Bedgood was the varsity boys basketball head coach at Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks from 2005-2012. Before that, he was a varsity assistant at Antelope Valley Christian from 1999-2001 and the head coach for Alemany High from 2002 to 2005.

Bedgood is a math teacher at Notre Dame High and he lives in the Saugus area with his wife and three kids. He said he’s taken the last two years off coaching to spend more time with his family.

“The timing was good for me. I wasn’t currently coaching and I definitely have a love for the community,” Bedgood said. “My kids go to school out here and my wife and I both went to school out here.”

There were “in the neighborhood of 20” total candidates interviewed for the job, Bolde said. The process was overseen by committee that included Bolde, Saugus Assistant Principal Rich Bahr, Saugus Athletic Director Jeff Hallman, former Saugus basketball head coach John Clark and other coaches on campus.

“They left no stone unturned,” Bedgood said of the hiring process.

Bolde said one major factor that made Bedgood stand out was the ringing endorsements he received from reliable references in the local basketball community.

That included the likes of Greg Herrick, the longtime successful high school and college basketball coach who was Hart’s boys basketball head man while Bedgood played there. Herrick is now the head women’s basketball coach at COC.

“Everything that we saw as a committee just validated what everybody was saying about him,” Bolde said of Bedgood.

Friday’s hiring comes roughly five weeks after Ballard was let go as Saugus’ head coach on Feb. 27. In Ballard’s six years at the helm, Saugus went 86-81 overall and 20-40 in Foothill League play.

This past season, Saugus finished 10-19 season and 0-10 in league play. Though a group of students and parents protested the decision in the days that followed his dismissal, the decision was upheld.

“Any time you have a transition there’s always room for some concern,” Bolde said of the protest. “But my hope is that the basketball players at Saugus High School and their parents will very quickly accept Bill as head coach and recognize that he has nothing but the best interest for the kids and the future of basketball.”

Bedgood said he’s anxious to get the new era of Saugus basketball started.

“I’m looking forward to getting a feel for what’s in the program and devising a strategy for how to get back,” he said.
