The bounce-back season is in full effect for Valencia boys volleyball.

With the first portion of the Foothill League season complete, Valencia is alone at the top of the league standings headed into spring break following its 3-0 sweep of Hart on Thursday at Valencia High.

The Vikings won by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-16.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in league last season – its worst showing in 12 years – Valencia is now back where it wants to be with a 4-0 league record.

“Going into spring break our goal was to be where we’re at,” said Valencia head coach Kevin Kornegay. “We’re 4-0, in the driver’s seat. Everyone is looking up at us. We control our destiny. That’s the way we look at it. That’s where we’d like to be.”

Kyle Ensing led Valencia with nine kills and five aces, Dakota Abbott added eight kills and Trevor Nally tacked on five kills.

The Vikings (7-7 overall) served well and kept Hart (2-5 overall, 1-3 Foothill League) at bay despite a scrappy performance.

“They were up for us. They battled with us. But I think one of the big differences today was our serving and their inability to pass consistently,” Kornegay said.

The league title hunt appears to be a three-horse race between Valencia, West Ranch and Saugus. Both West Ranch and Saugus are right behind Valencia at 3-1 in league.

Valencia faces West Ranch on April 16 in its first league match after spring break. Hart’s next league competition comes at home against Canyon on April 17.

Saugus 3, Canyon 0

Max Nua’s 16 kills, five digs and two blocks led Saugus to a sweep of Canyon by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-14.

The win keeps Saugus (9-2, 3-1) tied for second place in league with West Ranch.

Zech Lee added 10 kills, two blocks and six digs while Grant Spooner had six kills and eight digs. Saugus setter Justin Coleman tallied 38 assists.

Canyon falls to 1-3 in league play.

In its next league match, Saugus hosts Golden Valley on April 17.

West Ranch 3, Golden Valley 0

West Ranch won by game scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 on Thursday.

Peter Patag recorded 20 assists for West Ranch and Brett Krahl had 10 kills and five blocks. Ozzie Amadi added eight digs for West Ranch, which improved to 17-4 overall, 3-1 in Foothill competition.

Golden Valley is 0-4 in league.
