One of my favorite musicals "Mamma Mia!" has returned to the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood through April 19. I don't think you can see "Mamma Mia!" too many times.
The music is infectious and it is impossible not to leave the theater humming and feeling rejuvenated and energetic.
"Mamma Mia!" is back in Los Angeles after five years and it is none too soon.
The national tour of the popular musical doesn't disappoint. It is high energy and runs like clockwork. The leads all perform
admirably and the ensemble is a joy to watch - a finely tuned musical machine.
There's plenty of physical humor, some of it R-rated, but "Mamma Mia!" is still an accessible family musical.
The simple storyline - tied together the music of ABBA's timeless songs - is a sunny, funny tale of family and friendship that unfolds on a Greek island. On the eve of her wedding a daughter seeks to discover the identity of her father and brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
Among the songs are "Dancing Queen," "The Winner Takes It All," "Money, Money, Money" and "Take A Chance on Me."
There are currently 8 productions of "Mamma Mia!" running concurrently around the world (6 permanent productions and 2 tours).
This version of the national U.S. tour stars Michelle Dawson as "Donna Sheridan," Liana Hunt as "Sophie Sheridan," Kittra Wynn Coomer as "Rosie," Rachel Tyler as "Tanya," John Hemphill as "Sam Carmichael," Martin Kildare as "Bill Austin," Michael Aaron Lindner as "Harry Bright" and Adam Jacobs as "Sky."
Presented locally by Broadway/L.A. "Mamma Mia!" is the third show of its 2009 Pantages Season. Upcoming shows at the Pantages Theatre to round out the rest of the Broadway/LA season include: "Dirty Dancing" May 8 - June 28; "Fiddler on the Roof," starring Topol July 21 - Aug. 9; "Legally Blonde: The Musical" Aug. 12 - Sept. 6 and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical" Nov. 10 - Jan. 3.
Performance schedule is Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The Pantages Theatre is located in Hollywood at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard at Vine Street.
