The Hart baseball team took advantage of some costly mistakes and rallied to beat visiting West Ranch 5-2 on Wednesday and remain perfect in Foothill League play.

Down 2-0 with one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Indians’ Nick Valaika started the rally with a double and advanced to third on an Austin Russ ground out.

Valaika then scored on a wild pitch from Wildcats starter Christy Frierson to cut the West Ranch lead to 2-1.

After a Colby Kaneshiro single and Cody Miller walk, Paul Richan singled and tied the game at two.

The Wildcats had a chance to end the inning there, but an error by Jagger Rusconi allowed Miller to score and gave Hart its first lead of the game, 3-2.

The Indians would score two more in the inning to keep them ahead for good.

“We had a lot of quality at-bats in the sixth,” said Hart head coach Jim Ozella. “We took advantage of some mistakes and stayed after it. That’s how things go in the Foothill League. You need to play seven innings.”

Richan ended up going 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored and an RBI.

Pearson Good finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Jason Drees led the Wildcats, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

West Ranch will host Saugus on Friday and Hart will travel to Golden Valley.

“We played clean today,” Ozella said. “When you play games against good teams, you have to minimize your mistakes and hope you can pull through. We did that today.”
