Coming into Wednesday’s contest at Golden Valley, Canyon senior first baseman Vincent Fitzgerald hadn’t been able to get more than one hit in a game all year.

He broke that streak in a big way, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two grand slams, eight RBIs and three runs scored in Canyon’s 17-0 rout of the Grizzlies.

“He had struggled a little bit up to this point,” said Cowboys head coach Adam Schulhofer. “It was good to see him break through and have a game like that. To have two grand slams in a game is special.”

The Cowboys (5-5, 1-2) didn’t waste any time jumping on Golden Valley (3-7, 0-3).

By the time Fitzgerald, in the ninth spot of the lineup, got to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, Canyon already had a 4-0 lead with the bases loaded.

On a 2-1 count, Fitzgerald sent the ball over the center field fence and, with his first grand slam of the day, gave his team a very comfortable 8-0 lead.

He launched his second slam over the left field fence in the fourth inning, giving the Cowboys a 14-0 cushion.

“I think we played well in all three areas of the game,” Schulhofer said. “We hit the ball well, we had a couple defensive plays that saved runs and the pitching was good.”

Canyon starter Blake Leidholdt threw the complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out four.
He also went 3-for-5 at the plate and added three RBIs.

In the end, only four of the 14 players to come to the plate for the Cowboys didn’t score a run.

Jaeger Wunderlich went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and shortstop Jason Rowe matched Fitzgerald’s four-hit day, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Golden Valley’s best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning, when an error and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with one out.

But Leidholdt recovered, forcing Cole Bygum to fly out to center and Jesse Mark to ground into a force play at home.

Golden Valley’s next league game will be Friday hosting Hart.

Canyon will host the Valencia on Friday.
