Canyon High senior soccer player Alex McCaslin was an All-Foothill League first-teamer and now the 2008-09 All-SCV Boys Soccer Player of the Year. He helped lead the Cowboys to a league title.

For senior Alex McCaslin, the 2009 soccer season was a fulfillment of four years of hard work and belief that Canyon could stand alone atop the Foothill League.

The Cowboy midfielder proved to be the backbone of a Canyon squad that won its first outright title under head coach Khris Savage and advanced to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs before their season was ended by Bloomington.

McCaslin led Canyon with six goals in league as the Cowboys scored 12 victories versus nine losses and two ties overall.

His steady play took Canyon to its league crown, which few would have predicted before the season kicked off.

The consistent play of McCaslin anchored a defense, which keyed Canyon’s 1-0 playoff victory over Lynwood, while his scoring prowess allowed the Cowboys to open up the field and find multiple scoring options.

It was McCaslin who scored the first Canyon goal of league play only 30 seconds into the second half of the Cowboys’ 2-1 league-opening victory over West Ranch, setting the tone for a championship season.

McCaslin followed up that performance by scoring the only Canyon goal in the Cowboys’ second win of the Foothill League season as his team topped Golden Valley 1-0 and gained a lead in the standings that it never relinquished.

The positive environment McCaslin fostered also helped a group, which lost six of its first 10 games, find its stride during league play.

While the impact McCaslin brought to both ends of the field proved to be critical to Canyon’s success, it was also his ability to step up as a teammate and supporter of an experienced group that made him an invaluable part of the league champion.

For those reasons, McCaslin is The Signal’s pick for 2008-09 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
