Errors cost COC baseball

College of the Canyons fielder Nick Vigo makes a flying catch against Glendale College on Saturday.

College of the Canyons head coach Chris Cota is hoping his team’s loss on Saturday will fall in the category of a bump in the road rather than a trend setter.

COC committed five errors and lost 11-8 to the Glendale Community College Vaqueros at COC.

This was COC’s second loss in nine Western State Conference, South Division games and it was an uncharacteristically sloppy one.

“Glendale is a good team and when you make mistakes, pass balls, balks, not getting it done offensively ... It’s going to catch up to you,” Cota said.

Saturday’s game was an anomaly for COC (10-10 overall, 7-2 WSC South), which has been solid since the start of conference play on March 4.

The Cougars won their first two meetings against Glendale (11-10-1, 5-4), but failed to complete the season sweep on Saturday.

There are 12 conference games remaining for COC.

“We like where we’re at right now,” Cota said. “Obviously we’re not real happy about how things went today but I think we like where we’re at.”

Things got out of hand in a hurry for the Cougars, who fell behind 10-2 in the top of the seventh inning following Glendale’s four-run rally.

All four of those runs, which came against COC pitcher Ryan Paramo, were unearned and were aided by two passed balls and two additional fielding errors in the inning.

Cougars starter Ryan Cruz was the game’s losing pitcher after going five innings and allowing the three earned runs off five hits.

COC fought back in the game, scoring four in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Nick Vigo and David Oppenheim each had three hits for COC. Vigo drove in three runs and hit a solo home run in the first inning.

The Cougars outhit Glendale 14-12 in the game, but the late rally fell short.

Coming up next for COC is a two-game set against Antelope Valley beginning on Tuesday at home.
