Organizers and officials with Relay for Life of the Santa Clarita Valley held a kickoff event Saturday aimed at promoting awareness for the large annual event, which raises money to fund cancer research.

The event, held at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, featured a collection information on the American Cancer Society and the local Relay for Life event, which will be held this summer.

“This event itself is really to let people know that this is a way they can get involved,” said Betsy Keesler, a co-event chairwoman for Relay for Life of the Santa Clarita Valley. “We have one of the largest relays, yet every year we hear from people who didn’t know about it.”

The Relay for Life of the Santa Clarita Valley event usually attracts a large and enthusiastic crowd of attendees and participants, their combined efforts typically raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Really our mission is to end cancer, in a nutshell,” Keesler said. “It’s also to raise money for education and prevention.”

Advocacy is also a major component of the American Cancer Society’s mission, Keesler said.

This year’s Relay for Life event will be held May 17 at Central Park on Bouquet Canyon Road. For more information on the event, or to find out how to register to participate, visit

“At the end of the day, when people come, they leave with inspiration,” Keesler said.
