The College of the Canyons Studio Jazz Ensemble and Lab Bands kick off their concert season Friday night with their spring Jazz It! concert at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center.

The award-winning ensemble will perform music representing various styles of jazz including, swing, shuffle, ballads and jazz rock, as well as jazz arrangements by Dirk Fischer.

“This is our last concert before the Studio Big Band attends the Annual Reno Jazz Festival in April,” said K.C. Manji, the college’s music director.

“The band competed at the Reno Jazz Festival in 2007 and we won first place in our division. It was a great experience to hear all of the other bands from middle schools to major four-year colleges. It was an inspiring experience for everyone and we can hardly wait to go again.”

Raffle tickets will also be sold Friday night for the grand prize of a two-hour performance by the jazz band at a performance of the winner’s choice.

Funds raised go toward covering transportation costs for the band’s trip to the Reno Jazz Festival.

The Jazz It! concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for COC students and senior citizens.
