Support Ender and hospital expansion

To The Editor:

Will Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital be able to meet the health care needs of the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley 10 years from now? The answer is "no."

Even with approval of the current master plan, at least one more hospital will eventually be needed. But new hospitals require hundreds of millions of dollars to build and many years of planning and approval.

If Providence Holy Cross were to decide tomorrow to build a hospital in our valley -- and there are no firm indications of that being the case -- it would take a minimum of 10 years for the first patient to walk through the door.

The possibility of HMNMH building a second facility in Canyon Country has been discussed, but besides the economic impossibility, this would leave the community with two small hospitals unable to support the advanced services, such as neonatal intensive care and cardiac catheterization, which only a larger medical center can provide.

And the notion of erecting a new hospital building at the current site without the medical offices necessary to support it is like planning a shopping mall with no restaurants: it's possible, but hardly a recipe for success.

The merits of further development in our valley are certainly worthy of debate, but hospital expansion is not the place to draw the line.

We urge our patients and other citizens of Santa Clarita not to take for granted the future presence of adequate health care services when they cast ballots in the upcoming City Council election.

We encourage a vote for Laurie Ender, a candidate who has clearly stated her support for the health care facilities we will so desperately need in the coming years.
