Revisiting ‘Abandoned Flag Flies Anew’

Regarding the Sunday, March 16, Signal story “Abandoned Flag Flies Anew”: I salute you, Patrick McGill. Being a vet, I truly appreciate someone who shows their patriotism toward our nation’s symbol.

Thank you, Patrick.

I would, however, like to remind you that there is specific etiquette that must be observed when displaying our flag.

Federal law stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. The section of law dealing with American flag etiquette is generally referred to as the Flag Code. Here are a couple of general guidelines from the Flag Code:

  •  The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
  •  The flag should be flown in fair weather — unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use.

It appears that the location described in the Signal news article may not meet these standards.

A more complete list of general guidelines may found at the http://www.usa-flag-site.org or http://www.ushistory.org web sites.

There are many other websites that offer this information and may also be found by using Google.
