After a short bout with lung cancer, longtime California Highway Patrol commercial vehicle inspector
Alan Brice Clinkscales, 56, died last week.

Services are set for 1 p.m. today at Eternal Valley Memorial Park.

Alan served as a commercial vehicle inspection specialist at the CHP weight station alongside Interstate 5 just south of Highway 126. He joined the CHP in 1987, and held several positions at the Castaic inspection facility. Alan also met his wife, Debbie, through the Newhall CHP station, where she served as a clerk in the front office.

"He was with friends when he died," Debbie said. "That was the greatest thing."

She added that her husband's bout with lung cancer was short and sudden.

The first signs of illness appeared shortly after last October's fires, when he was diagnosed with a sinus
infection.

In November, a routine check-up revealed that his sinus infection turned into bronchitis. When Debbie
took her husband to the doctor's office in December, it was confirmed that he had bronchitis.

Doctors gave him antibiotics, though his condition did not improve.

Through the month of January, he went through more check-ups before it was revealed that Alan had four
tumors in his lung.

He immediately started radiation and chemotherapy treatments before losing his battle with lung cancer
on March 26.

"It was a shock that it came so quickly," CHP Officer Michelle Esposito said. "He was a very giving and caring person."

She said that Alan was an avid bowler at Valencia Lanes in Newhall, and served his country in the U.S.
Navy. He was also a graduate of Canyon High School.

Eternal Valley Memorial Park is located at 23287 Sierra Highway in Newhall.
