Hart senior Sophie Cortes, left, was voted this year's Foothill League Player of the Year.

The Hart girls soccer team was building up to this type of season.

And so was Sophie Cortes, one of that team’s most crucial players.

Hart finished second place in the Foothill League each of the previous two seasons, once coming within a point of winning league.

This year, the Hart Indians broke through and won their first Foothill championship since 2007.

And now for another breakthrough. Cortes, following an array of prior honors, was voted the 2013-14 Foothill League Girls Soccer Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Cortes, now a senior midfielder, was an All-CIF-Southern Section Division II selection and an All-Foothill first-teamer last season after a breakout junior year.

The third-year varsity player continued her assert her dominance in the midfield this year, providing a spark on offense and defense. And she was always good for supplying her team with a jolt of energy when needed.

Cortes finished the year with 11 goals and 12 assists with playoffs included.

“She’s the engine of the team,” said Hart head coach Guilherme Mitrovich. “She runs the midfield. She has a very strong personality. She’s the one who’s always talking to the team and pumping them up and things like that.”

In addition to winning league, Cortes and the Indians advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division II championship game, which was their first CIF title game since 1999.

After Cortes, Hart seniors Destinney Duron and Laura Sega and junior Danielle Spickard were all named to the All-Foothill first team.

Duron had 13 goals and 11 assists in her fourth year of varsity play.

Valencia, which finished second in league, placed three players on the first team.

Last year’s Foothill Player of the Year, Valencia senior Becca Harrison, was joined by senior teammates Sammy Simon and goalkeeper Nicole Joseph on the first tam.

For third-place Canyon, junior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy and senior Sarah Cipperley earned first-team nods.

Coming in as the league’s fourth place team, West Ranch was represented by senior Noelle Webber and junior Marisa Magsarili on the first team.

The final two players on the first team were Saugus sophomore Elise Nogle and Golden Valley senior Samantha Jehnings.

On the All-Foothill second team, Hart sophomores Sarah Lindborg and Brooke MacArthur made the list, along with Valencia junior Bailey Reid and her sophomore teammate Alyson Spencer.

Additional second-teamers included senior Mari Kneisel and junior Kendall Bietsch for Canyon, seniors Taylor Ayers and Hannah Hoskins for West Ranch, seniors Alana Shaw and Maddie Hebert for Saugus and senior Courtney Ravenell and sophomore Natalie Amara for Golden Valley.
