The College of the Canyons jazz bands are tuning up for their next concert "JAZZ IT!" at which will be the raffle drawing for many prizes including a special band appearance at the winner's next party.

The Studio Big Band and Lab Band, under the direction of KC Manji, will perform beginning 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

On the program are a variety of jazz tunes for combo and big band including some of the pieces the group is taking to competition at the Reno Jazz Festival in April.

Accompanists featured during the concert will be David Edelstein, Rob Rudolph and Jeff Takiguchi.

The highlight of the evening is the raffle drawing with the grand prize -- a two-hour personal concert by the big band. Winners need not be present.

Concert tickets are available at the door and are $5 for senior adults and students, and $10 for the general public.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go to bus transportation when the 17-member Studio Jazz Ensemble travels to compete in the 52nd annual Reno Jazz Festival in April.

Band members are fired up for the competition as they will be performing in honor of their former band director Dirk Fischer who died last spring.

The big band is aiming at repeating its performance in 2007 when it took first place in its division.

Music Director KC Manji says the ensemble needs to raise $4,500 to cover transportation costs to Reno. Band members are selling raffle tickets now until the March 21 concert, when winners will be drawn.

"We have gathered some very unique prizes with the grand prize of having the band perform at a party held anywhere in the Santa Clarita Valley," Manji said. "We'll play at a church event, wedding, anniversary, and barbecue or birthday party. It's up to the winner."

Fundraising is necessary to attend the competition because concert ticket sales go to the college's general fund, Manji added.

Each student is responsible for their own meals, hotel room and tickets to the festival.
