UPDATE: Gas main repaired after Soledad shut down

A gas main break near Soledad Canyon Road between Canyon Country and Saugus shut down the main Santa Clarita Valley artery in both directions Friday afternoon, frustrating drivers for more than an hour.

The gas main break was reported shortly after 1:40 p.m. around Soledad Canyon Road and Honby Avenue in Canyon Country, prompting deputies to clear an area around the break as a precaution, Lt. John Rush said.

Traffic backed up onto Golden Triangle Road and crammed the Home Depot parking lot by Ruether Drive. The lot was so crowded with vehicles that drivers could barely maneuver through the area.

“There’s no fire and no explosion,” Fire Department Chief Anderson Mackey said about 2:25 p.m. “When we arrived on scene we set up a perimeter around the break.

“We’ve got to make sure to keep people out of there,” he said.

Gas Company crews arrived at the scene to repair the leak, and traffic was gradually allowed back on Soledad after more than an hour’s delay.

By 5 p.m., the gas main had been repaired, Rush said. The cause of the rupture was reported to be a car collision, he added.
