Canyon's Chuck Johns won five Foothill League titles in five seasons as Cowboys coach.

Canyon High has had its most successful run ever in girls basketball over the last five seasons under head coach Chuck Johns.

Now it will be looking for a new voice.

Johns resigned as Cowboys head coach last week because his family may soon have to move out of the area.

“It was hard telling the kids you weren’t going to be back,” Johns said. “The kids really built it. I’ve had great families, great parents who get involved. A lot of it has to do with timing. The timing was right.”

Johns took over Canyon basketball in 2009 in a time of turmoil.

Canyon had a mutual parting with coach Stan Delus in 2009 after the team had to forfeit 11 wins because of falsified residency records.

Johns took over and turned the program into a state powerhouse.

In the last five seasons, the Cowboys have won five Foothill League titles, have been to five CIF-Southern Section divisional quarterfinals and have a record of 122-30 overall.

In the postseason they have gone 12-6.

Prior to Johns, Canyon girls basketball won one Foothill League title.

Johns will be one of the coaches of the girls all-star senior game at the SCV Hoops Finale on March 29 at West Ranch High.

The game will start at 5 p.m. and feature the Santa Clarita Valley’s top senior prep players.
