Bakers and their sweet treats filled the room at the Valencia Country Club Saturday night to auction off their creations for the benefit of a local nonprofit.

The sixth annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction drew several cake designs, big and small, each with a theme representing a Santa Clarita Valley organization.

“We’ve been able to generate great relationships with companies and local bakers,” said SCV Youth Project Executive Director Kim Goldman. “It has grown into this really unique, creative, sweet event that is really about partnership and community.”

Proceeds from the auction go toward funding the SCV Youth Project, a nonprofit organization that provides free counseling to students in the William S. Hart Union High School District.

“We work in one-on-one basis to do outreach education and crisis intervention,” Goldman said.

The mission of the project is to provide a safe haven to strenghten fragile bonds between teenagers and their families through free counseling and support groups.

College of the Canyons culinary arts student Karina Romero hoped to shine light on the future of the school’s program through baking.

“Our cake is a rendering of our future building,” Romero said. “It has a cafe where we serve the community and whomever walks through. We’re hoping to start a catering program there.”

Leigh Grode, a professional baker and co-owner of Joanie and Leigh’s Cakes served as a celebrity judge for the event.

“I’m pro-youth,” Grode said. “I understand what it’s like to be facing insurmountable odds and feeling like there’s nowhere to go.

“These amazing beings reach out and teach children how to save their own lives with the simple solution of love.”
Hockey fans filled the auction list of Los Angeles Kings Fan Ryan Stevens.

“Our cake is white frosting with white cake, chocolate frosting with chocolate cake and red velvet with cream cheese frosting,” Stevens said. “The bottom layer is the ice rink, the middle is the net and the top layer is the Kings’ logo with a net.”
