Our non-profit organization, the Santa Clarita Youth Sports Association (SCYSA) Wildcats, with the insight of Coach John Torres launched our inaugural Boys U-9 Developmental Lacrosse program recently.

We attracted 37 kids – through word of mouth - participating and they are first, second and third graders. Demand was all it took.

This program was launched on the heels of a successful YMCA developmental Lacrosse program that we ran this past winter.

Our U-9 kids played their first lacrosse games Feb 22 in a Lacrosse Jamboree at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

We use high school lacrosse players as volunteers to assist our coaches in our U-9 program during practices, and as mentors for our young players.

The kids practice on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at Heritage Park and will play when the older kids have home games at West Ranch High school later next month.

Our youth program grew again this season with two Boys U-15 teams, two Boys U-13 teams, a Boys U-11 team, a Girls Middle School lacrosse team and our new Boys U-9 program.

Overall, we have about 150 kids playing lacrosse at the youth level.

High school lacrosse also experienced growth again this season. This is West Ranch High School's second CIF season, and Valencia High School will start their inaugural CIF season.

In fact, both of those teams will squared off in their season opener at West Ranch High School on March 1st.

Generally, we play rain or shine. Lacrosse is an all weather sport.
