Santa Clarita Valley residents interested in a progress report on the Whittaker-Bermite site cleanup can catch a quarterly meeting on that topic Wednesday at City Hall.

The Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force for the Whittaker-Bermite Remediation & Reuse Project will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first-floor Century Room of City Hall.

The meetings feature reports from the many agencies involved in cleaning up the site, sometimes dubbed the valley’s “donut hole” for its location in the center of the SCV on Soledad Canyon Road south of the Saugus Speedway.

At 7 p.m. the same day, the Citizens Advisory Group for Whittaker-Bermite cleanup will meet at United Methodist Church, 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.

The Whittake-Bermite site, nearly 1,000 acres of land, was used as a munitions-manufacturing plant from the 1930s until the 1980s and is contaminated with perchlorate and other toxins.

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control is the lead agency in the site cleanup, but many agencies have been involved over the years.

The Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force on Whittaker-Bermite has two more meetings scheduled this year following Wednesday’s: on July 2 and Nov. 5. All are held at 3:30 p.m. on a Wednesday at Santa Clarita City Hall.
