LOS ANGELES (AP) — A body has been found in the Los Angeles River north of downtown.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Shawn Lenske says firefighters were called at 7:26 a.m. Monday to assist police and sheriff's investigators in recovering the body.

The river level is currently shallow in the concrete-lined channel near the Spring Street Bridge between Chinatown and Lincoln Heights.

Circumstances of the death are not immediately known.

Homeless people often camp in the riverbed and during last week's heavy rains firefighters rescued several people as the river suddenly surged to life with fast-flowing water.
