The veterans got the best of the rookies in the first-ever CIF lacrosse meeting between two Santa Clarita high schools.

West Ranch, in its second season of CIF-sanctioned lacrosse, defeated first-year Valencia 14-5 on Saturday morning at West Ranch High School.

“So glad to get this first one under our belt. The Vikings played well, and I really look forward to good things for West Ranch this year,” said West Ranch head coach Mike Borsos.

Matt Palma, a senior from West Ranch, opened up the scoring for the Wildcats two minutes into the game.

But Valencia answered back within seconds to tie at 1-1.

That was the closest that Valencia came to West Ranch all day.

West Ranch was led by Aurora University commit J.K. Torres with three goals and three assists.

Junior Garrett Clark and freshman Robert Willcox also had three goals each.

West Ranch junior Roger Willcox scored a goal and had four assists.

Senior Colton Long had two goals and freshman Connor Clark also scored for the Wildcats.

Kobe Diamond scored once for West Ranch as well.

Valencia was led by football star Malik Townsend with four goals.

West Ranch faces Malibu High on Friday as Valencia prepares for Sierra Canyon.

“We played better later in the game after our first-game jitters were gone,” Clark said.

In JV action, West Ranch beat Valencia 15-0.
