Morphing from a website design firm into a full service website design, maintenance and marketing firm has landed Santa Clarita’s Scorpion Design onto the Inc. 500/5000 List for the past three consecutive years.

And the firm appears to be headed toward landing on it again this year, said an executive with company.

The growth experienced by the company also resulted in Scorpion Design leasing another 5,200 square feet of new space this past November, said its CFO, Matthew Shepherd.

“We had been in 16,000 square feet of space, but we outgrew that,” Shepherd said.

Originally launched by its founder and CEO, Rustin Kretz, back in 1999 as a website design firm with only five employees, Scorpion Design later evolved into a full-service marketing partner for its clients – and that has been key to its success, Shepherd said.

The company incorporated formally in 2003 and has steadily growing at its Valencia headquarters since. Today, it has some 140 employees – most of them local to Santa Clarita.

In 2013, the firm was again recognized as one of the fastest growing companies for the third consecutive year when it reported a 289 percent growth rate with revenues of $19.6 million for the year of 2012.

But, in 2013 revenue just topped $25 million which puts the company’s growth rate at 219 percent, Shepherd reports.

“That’s a bit down from the rate we were able to put out last year, but it should keep us on the Inc. list,” he said.

“And that’s a very difficult trajectory to maintain and stay on that list when your numbers keep getting bigger.”
Scorpion Design first identified law firms as its client base. It felt there was an opportunity in that field because attorneys were among the early adaptors of Internet marketing, Shepherd said.

Having successfully built that market niche, the firm has also entered the hospital and healthcare industries, and is just beginning to work with the home services industry.

Using platforms Scorpion built in-house – it doesn’t outsource any of its work to other countries – one system manages the clients’ custom built websites on the backend, and another system is used to manage client communications to ensure a speedy response to clients. A handful of freelancedwriters are used to help write content.

What Scorpion delivers, Shepherd said, is it gives a client company an in-house full time marketing firm and the role the company plays.

“We don’t just take a fee, it’s a relationship,” Shepherd said. “We don’t just build a website. We’re on the hook for the productivity of that website - how many times did phone ring for client, how many contacts were filled out online, what are the needs for clients? It’s a constant effort and cooperative effort with the client.”
