Sleep Deprivation Puts Teens and Adults at Risk for Psychiatric Illness

Sleep-deprived teens have a high a risk of developing serious mental health disorders that parents and teachers may not recognize as behaviors associated with mental illness.

The situation also poses a "which came first - the chicken or the egg?" dilemma according to Joan Aschoff, Psy.D., executive vice president of programs for Santa Clarita’s Child and Family Center.

Sometimes the lack of sleep brings on the disorders, and in other instances the disorders can bring on the inability to sleep.
