Knight, two others introduce motion to expel state Senator convicted of fraud and perjury

Three Republican state senators, including one who represents portions of the Santa Clarita Valley, have introduced a resolution calling for the expulsion of another senator who was recently convicted of perjury and voter fraud.

State Sen. Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, introduced the resolution along with state Sen. Joel Anderson, R-San Diego, and state Sen. Andy Vidak, R-Hanford, on Wednesday and plan to move for a vote on the matter Thursday.

If adopted, the resolution would oust state Sen. Roderick Wright, D-Inglewood, who was recently convicted by a jury on eight felony counts of perjury and voter fraud amid accusations that he did not live in the district he was elected to represent.

That matter is pending appeal.

“It really brings the state and the Senate into a little bit of a problem if you have a convicted felon voting on legislation and potentially being the deciding vote,” Knight said Wednesday.

The resolution would have to be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Senate.

Knight, Anderson and Vidak sent a letter to Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, earlier this month requesting Wright be removed from office.

In an earlier interview with the Associated Press, Steinberg said he does not believe the Senate should take action on Wright until final resolution on the charges.

“Unless and until there is a final conviction for a felony, I do not believe it is appropriate or necessary to expel Senator Wright or ask him to resign,” Steinberg said, according to the Associated Press.

The Senate District Knight represents takes in eastern and central portions of the Santa Clarita Valley.
