Accused murderer Michael Dean Stephens returns to court for a pretrial conference Tuesday.

Stephens is accused of the murder of Joshua Pipho, and of the attempted murder of Pipho's friend, Chad Weitz, at a Stevenson Ranch party in November 2007.

Stephens, 19, is accused of stabbing Pipho, 20, and then running over him with a car and killing him at the party. During the melee, Weitz, 22, came to Pipho's aide. Stephens then allegedly ran down Weitz and stabbed him 17 times.

Weitz survived the attack but sustained major injuries, including a punctured lung and massive blood loss.

Stephens was charged with murder and attempted premeditated murder by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. He retained private counsel Richard Hirsch during the pretrial proceedings in 2008.

Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender Betsy Mogul replaced Hirsch on Jan. 7, 2009. The trial resumes in Dept. H at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
