Canyon Country man faces preliminary hearing in shooting death of his father

A preliminary hearing has been ordered for a Canyon Country man accused of killing his father last spring, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

Construction worker Juan Alexander Mejia, 30, appeared Monday in San Fernando Superior Court on a felony charge of murder, Ricardo Santiago said Tuesday.

Mejia was ordered to appear back in court for a preliminary hearing March 20. During that hearing, prosecutors will present evidence in the case, and the defense can respond, after which the judge will decide if the case should go to trial.

He is being held on $1 million bail, accused of murdering his father, Juan Mejia, who was 53.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies arrested the younger Mejia May 18, 2013, the day after his father died at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital from injuries suffering in a shooting on the night of May 16, 2013.
