Hart's Frank Lonsinger, right, scores against Beckman High defender Shane Taleisnik (3) at Hart High School during Friday's CIF playoff game.

Down by one early and maybe too close for comfort at halftime, the Hart Indians pulled away Friday at Hart High and defeated the Beckman High Patriots of Irvine 92-61 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IIA playoffs.

Beckman surprised the Foothill League champion Indians by jumping out to a 17-16 lead in the first quarter.

Hart’s answer was senior point guard Lewis Stallworth.

His first-quarter, buzzer-beating 3-pointer capped a 15-3 Indian run to end the opening frame.

Stallworth scored 12 of those points and finished the game with 21.

“Lewis can put up points in a hurry,” said Hart head coach Tom Kelly, “His scoring kept the pace up.”

Hart (25-2 overall) raced to a perfect Foothill League season with consistently uptempo basketball. But Beckman wanted to play fast in the first quarter too.

The Patriots (13-14) beat Hart’s pressure defense with open 3-point shots.

Beckman’s Michael Yee’s third 3-pointer of the first frame tied the game 16-16 with 3:36 left in the quarter.

Yee led his team with 18 points.

A minute later, Stallworth went to work, another highlight included an alley-oop dunk.

Hart led 31-20 after the first quarter, but missed layups and Beckman 3-pointers limited them to a 45-35 halftime lead.

The Indians led 66-46 after three quarters.

“(In the second half) there wasn’t as much scrambling,” said Hart’s Myles Franklin of his team’s defense, “We played straight up.”

The adjustment worked, as Beckman turned the ball over 13 times in the second half.

Franklin scored 14 points and Frank Lonsinger added 13 for the Indians.
