Hart soccer pushes back

Hart's Sarah Lindborg (6) celebrates with teammates Danielle Spickard (13) and Laura Flores after her goal on Friday at Hart High School.

Hart girls soccer wasn’t about to be pushed around on its home field in the playoffs.

Against a big, physical Ventura High Cougars team, the Hart Indians pushed back and fought their way to a 2-0 win in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs on Friday at Hart High.

“We knew they were going to come out hard so we just tried playing as defensively as possible and created as many chances as we could up top,” said Hart senior Destinney Duron, who scored her team’s insurance goal in the 67th minute.

As Foothill League champions, Hart (15-5-4) was coming off four straight wins in Foothill League to finish the regular season. On Friday, the Indians kept that momentum rolling by coming out of the gate with an aggressive style of play.

In the 25th minute, Hart got on the board when Sarah Lindborg found the ball off a rebound in traffic and kicked it into an open net for the 1-0 lead.

The deflection came from an initial shot taken by Anna Sarno.

And despite taking the upper hand, the Indians didn’t let up from there.

“All week we talked about making sure we had two intense halves and make sure (Ventura) didn’t get on top of us,” said Hart head coach Guilherme Mitrovitch.

Trailing by a goal at halftime, Ventura (9-7-6) came out of the break with a mind-set to try to match Hart’s intensity and take advantage of its tall defenders.

Cougars head coach Katie Tunin said her team struggled to generate a consistent offensive push.

“That was absolutely our downfall,” Tunin said of the offense. “We were doing a much better job of that earlier, but in CIF there’s a little more pressure.”

Late in the second half, Duron doubled her team’s lead when she secured the ball at the top of the 18-yard box following a Sophie Cortes shot.

Duron took one touch and fired a left-footed shot into the left corner of the goal.

The way Hart’s defense was playing, that spelled an end to Ventura.

The win puts Hart into a second-round matchup against Chaparral High of Temecula on Wednesday. A coin flip will determine the home team for that game.
