Here was the reward for Albert Einstein Academy boys basketball.

For winning the Omega League for the second year in a row, the Einstein Rockets were matched up against the top seed in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VAA playoffs on Friday night.

And it ended up in a 90-43 loss to Saddleback Valley Christian at Saddleback Valley High.

“They were a very good team, very athletic,” said Einstein head coach Greg Patterson. “They had a couple (6-foot-8-inch) kids, so it was a tough matchup.”

Both teams received a first-round bye. Einstein finished the season 16-5 after going 12-1 in Omega League play.

Saddleback Valley, the San Joaquin League champions, improved to 23-5 with the win.

Chris Yin led Einstein with 19 points, including five 3-pointers in Friday’s game. Jackie Saucer added 10 points of his own, though he left the game injured in the third quarter.

Einstein’s best run came in the third quarter when it went on a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 25 points.

The run ended after Saucer came out of the game.

Saddleback Valley’s starters played from start to finish.

Patterson said he’s not dwelling too much on the loss.

“Overall this year we’ve really mad a lot of progress,” he said. “I’m proud of where we’re at right now winning back-to-back league (titles).”
